Ang Ating Pamilyang Pilipino
The Filipino Culture's Effort on Family
The Filipino culture is as diverse as the dialects they speak-- 125 in all. Long before the Spaniards came, the Chinese traded commerce with the Philippines, and many stayed and married Filipino women. This explains the influence of the Chinese, such as superstitions, beliefs, quaint practices, and gambling. By the middle of the 14th century, Muslim missionaries arrived in the southernmost islands, now known as Mindanao, and up to the present the Muslims continue to resist and fight the Philippine government. The Spaniards' four-century rule of the country imprinted the strongest influence: Christianity, love for festivities, music, romance, gaiety and graft and corruption. Spanish friars introduced the Catholic custom of godparenthood, which fused with the Pre-Hispanic practices blood covenant with tribal allies to create a network of "compadres" (personal relationships), making Filipinos obsessed with "hiya", a tagalog term that conveys the concept of 'face'--to behave well toward family and friends, to display respect on an elder, to act with kindness, and to show deference toward a superior all show exemplary 'hiya' and are ways to gain face. Equally vital is "utang na loob", which is debt of gratitude that Filipinos are expected to repay in return for favors. At best, this mutual obligation is an ideal social security mechanism. Filipinos help to raise their siblings and later care for their aged parents. If they become more fortunate, they are required to support their relatives or find them jobs. They have been taught since children to respect authority, not to rebel or question, which made them passive-- even fatalistic--so that the poor believe they were destined for it, while the rich assumed they were ordained for it. The father of the family is also presumed to be the breadwinner and wives looked after the home and children. After Americans arrived, the Philippines became the most westernized society in Asia with the highest literacy rate. Rich families sent their children to Manila private schools and European universities. Pop culture was transmuted and women earned equal status with men. Families remained close and religious, but population growth forced many to migrate to America, some in search of a better life, others disgusted with the system of government, many confused, depressed, and dispirited. But, despite all the diversities Filipinos have and continue to undergo, its most valuable assets are the people's belief and support in the family and their strength and resiliency to not only survive but rise above all kinds of dilemas because of undaunting faith in God.

"One of the most notable characteristics of the Filipino society is the tradition of strong family loyalty."
